The History of the Manx Electric Railway Museum
The Manx Electric Railway opened from Derby Castle to Groudle in late September 1893, operating for 17 days before closing for winter. The extension beyond Groudle to Laxey was completed in Summer 1894, with the further extension to Ramsey completed in 1896. The railway continued to grow beyond this date, from just 3 Motor Cars and 6 Trailer Cars in 1893 to 33 Motor Cars and 34 Trailer Cars by the early 1930's. The Railway also carried significant amounts of freight, including livestock and mail, with over 25 items of freight stock constructed since 1893. The Railway has continued to go from strength to strength, with two major enthusiast events taking place each year, 'Rush Hour' during the Easter period, alongside the "Manx Heritage Transport Festival', which takes place during the last week of July. The Manx Electric Railway Museum, opened in the Goods Depot at Derby Castle Depot in late 2014, celebrates the rich history of the Manx Electric Railway, with artifacts from many areas of the railways history available for viewing. This includes tickets, advertising hoardings and motor testing equipment! The Manx Electric Railway Museum would not have been possible without the assistance of the following:
